PLACEMENT TESTS

For all educators

To determine an individual's stage of mastery and recommended Math-U-See level

DOWNLOADABLE PLACEMENT TESTS

For tutors and schools

To assess and determine targeted individual, small group and whole school needs

The placement tests are a diagnostic tool and will help you to:

  • Identify your students current level of maths mastery
  • Discover gaps in their understanding to assist planning of additional support required
  • Choose a program that will support them based on what they need to learn next.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

If the following questions apply to your student, you can proceed directly
to the recommended levels below:

START WITH PRESCHOOL MATHS

  • If you are looking for a a fun introduction to maths
  • If your pre-schooler is showing an interest in numbers & counting
  • If  your pre-schooler can focus for 5-10 minutes at a time

START BUILDING FOUNDATIONS

  • If your student still uses their fingers to count
  • If your student is yet to understand place value and you're needing to establish basic maths understanding
  • If your student can read, write and count numerals 0-9

Every student is unique in their sequential understanding of maths.

Therefore, the placement tests are designed to determine their current level of maths mastery regardless of their age or expected grade level.

Choose a pre-test to identify which topics your student needs to learn next.

Note: If your student is using their fingers to count, struggles with regrouping or has difficulty with Place Value, you'll need to begin with the Alpha level

** Test results are not stored on our server and are only sent to the email address you choose for each individual test. We can send to the same email address a maximum of:

- 1 placement test report every 5 minutes

- 10 placement test reports every 24 hours

Therefore, if you are planning to test more students than the above quota, please use different email addresses or consider using the downloadable placement test.

HOW THE TESTING SEQUENCE WORKS (ONLINE TESTING)

1. CHOOSE A PRE-TEST

Choose either the Foundations Placement Pre-Test or the Advanced Placement Pre-Test based on what you know to be your student's general level of maths mastery. The pre-test is designed to quickly establish foundational understandings. If you're unsure where to begin, start at the foundations pre-test.

You can read more about why the placement pre-test matters here.

NOTE: Your student can do their working out for each equation on a seperate page. They should not use a calculator.

2. PROGRESS THROUGH THE PRE-TEST LEVELS

Click "Start" and then let your student follow the prompts. As they answer all questions correctly, they will progress through the test.

Once the student answers a few questions incorrectly, they will be automatically directed to the full placement test for that level to determine if that's the appropriate area of need.

3. COMPLETE THE FULL PLACEMENT TEST

The full placement test will then ask more of the same kinds of questions to check whether or not this is a topic your student has mastered. Remember, this is an opportunity to gain clarity on what is needing to be taught.                                                         You're looking for fluency and automaticity, not 'can they struggle to get the answer right'.                          Once you observe them struggling, this identifies where you need to begin.

Watch the short explanation video as soon as you begin to ensure you understand the process thoroughly.

FOR MOST ACCURATE TEST RESULTS

Sit together

This allows you to support and encourage your student to give their best answers. You can observe their progress, and identify whether they have mastery or not.

Encourage but don't tell

The idea of the placement test is to accurately identify the student's level of understanding. If they get stuck, don't save them. Encourage them to choose "I don't know".

Observe the tricky topics

Identify where the student begins to struggle. You'll then be able to fill in any gaps and give them the maths foundations necessary for them to master maths.

HOW THE PLACEMENT TEST RESULTS WORK

At the completion of any placement test, you'll be directed to one of the following results:

Below 80%

This indicates that the student is not confident in life application of these subjects. Your student needs to master the material presented in this level to be able to progress in maths with confidence.

More than 80%

This level is easy for your student and they've mastered the concepts! You'll be directed to continue to the next test. Keep testing until they start to struggle with answering the questions.

recordING MULTIPLE students' results

To keep track of multiple students' results, we've created a simple downloadable template below. For an excel spreadsheet enabling this please contact us directly and we can send you a group-specific Placement Test pack.

AFTER PLACEMENT TESTING

Whether you've used our downloadable or online placement test process, you'll now have identified your student current level of maths mastery and will know which Math U See level is recommended to best support your student.

Your student's recommended level highlights exactly where you need to start to fill gaps of understanding, and what you can do to teach them in an effective multisensory - at their pace (so the topics covered are explored in-depth and they really understand what you're teaching them).

For program recommendations, you'll need to have manipulatives (hands-on teaching tools) to complete the step-by-step lesson instructions, student workbooks and tests. After all, we are teaching in a multi sensory way.... the way we all learn best!
