Designed to be hands on

Our programs are multi-sensory, meaning your students will learn maths using real objects, rather than just learning from a book and trying to conceptualise*. The manipulatives (hands-on tools) are our starting place; our main teaching tool and are adaptable to suit all ages, grade levels and learning styles. They have been proven by thousands of Australian students to be incredibly effective. *Our later advanced levels don't use manipulatives, but they do build on the understanding from the foundational levels.

Based on mastery, not speed

The Maths Australia approach is not based on keeping up, it's based on mastering a topic area and then moving on to the next. This mastery approach caters for kids who are ahead of their grade or struggling to keep up. Students develop a deeper, more satisfying & concrete understanding of concepts through our methodologies which helps you, the teacher, keep your students engaged in class.

Based on ability level, not grade

Our free online placement tests allow you to fully understand which level is appropriate for your student regardless of their expected school grade. By teaching based on what they do and don't know, you can instead fill the gaps or accelerate them at the appropriate pace to achieve the best results.

Maths Australia's approach is to build mechanisms into your teaching so you know (and your student knows) where they're up to at any point. Each concept builds on each other (you can't learn multiplication if you don't know addition and subtraction first). Plus, the testing at the end of each lesson makes sure your student has fully understood the concept that has been taught before moving on.

Australian Curriculum outcomes

Learning occurs, according to research and evidence-based methodology, with students mastering each concept before moving on to the next, sequentially. Therefore, if you're looking to aligns to ACARA guidelines you'll need to do so in a modified sequence based on mastery of each maths topic (rather than on a grade level basis). The depth of knowledge far outweighs the extra little bit of effort on your part.

How our MultiSensory Maths Program Works

STEP 1

Prepare to teach

Each concept is clearly outlined with explicit guidelines on how to deliver every lesson with your students. Each level comes with instruction manuals and lesson-by-lesson videos. The hands-on manipulatives reinforce each concept in an engaging, multi-sensory way. Extra examples and activities, teaching tips, testing and answers are all included

STEP 2

Present your lesson

The instruction manuals will give you everything you need to present each lesson. Because you'll have a clear understanding of what your student needs to learn (using our free online placement tests), you'll know exactly where to start and what they need to focus on to move forward confidently with maths. Because you're meeting the student concepts they're up to, you'll be able to deliver excellent lessons, every time.

STEP 3

Build strong foundations 

Practice each concept with your student using specific tools to build strong foundations in their understanding of maths, using elegant tools that can effectively and accurately represent each maths progression.

Our proven method (‘build-write-say’) will help you establish a systematic, hands-on approach to effective learning. Build each problem with the manipulatives, write it down step-by-step, then ask your student to say how the solution works. Learning is reinforced as the student explains the concept back to you. Regular use of the same manipulatives improves understanding and retention of each topic - so you won't have to go over each lesson again and again!

STEP 4

Progress with your student

Your students will develop mastery and, as a result, grow in confidence with maths as you help them tackle more concepts. They will have more confidence in you, in the tools used, and most importantly - in themselves. 

Our recommended programs are designed to support individual learning at each student's own pace, and so tailoring your approach will help them really take the proper time to grasp each concept. Students develop maths mastery and confidence by fully understanding what's being taught to them, and progressing at pace appropriate to them.

How does our recommended program align with the Australian Curriculum?

We advocate for a mastery-based teaching approach vs the Australian Curriculum "spiral approach" because research (and experience) shows that kids are more successful with maths when they build on their knowledge in a cumulative sequential manner. Students progress through each level sequentially (left to right above) to build on the foundational principles learnt in the previous levels. For some students, a particular level will be easy and they'll breeze through. For other students, that same level may take a little longer. The layout of the program caters to any student's learning speed.

Simply take your time on the levels you're struggling with, and breeze on through if you're mastering it quickly. Each level comes with lessons and materials to make sure 'mastery' of that level has been achieved before you move on to the next.
