About this Training
Here's what's inside the Multisensory Maths - Fractions, Decimals & Percents Training
So many of our students struggle when it comes to understanding fractions, decimals and percents and the suitable mathematical applications. If mastery of these concepts continue to evade a student, this shortcoming affects their confidence not only for assessments and exams, but for everyday life applications, as well as future study options and life career choices.
We've all tried teaching fractions with pie graphs and slices of pizza, only to find it ineffective. The student doesn't understand the concept because they have no tactile understanding of how to divide and decimalise a number.
However, using specific Fraction Overlays and Algebra Decimal Inserts and a clear methodology that take these more advanced concepts into a hands-on, multisensory approach, you can simply and easily teach these concepts!
We'll show you how to easily communicate to students the relationships between all of these and help you improve student engagement and confidence with fractions, decimals & percents.
Here's an example of using the fraction overlays to show equivalent fractions, decimals and percents:
This training will give you a toolbox of clear instructions, methods and resources to confidently teach fractions, decimals and percents to students at a general or advanced level, or in an intervention setting.
1. Introduction to the Pedagogy of Multisensory Maths Instruction
2. Fraction of a Number
3. Fraction of One
4. Addition of Fractions
5. Subtraction of Fraction
6. Equivalent Fractions
7. Multiplication of Fractions
8. Division of Fractions
Decimals and Percents:
1. Introduction to Decimals & Percents
2. Addition of Decimal Numbers
3. Subtraction of Decimal Numbers
4. Transforming Fractions to a Decimal and a Percent
5. Application - Money & Measurement
Extra topics covered for the Extended Two Day In-Person Event:
1. Multiplication of Decimals
2. Division of Decimals
3. Indices and Exponents
4. Place Value of whole numbers and decimals with exponential notation
5. Money and currency
6. Metric measures and conversions
7. Finding the percent of a number or pie graph
To participate in this training, you will need:
FRACTION OVERLAY KIT
Used when teaching fractions in our maths program, this updated Kit includes more unit pieces to make it easier for students to build mixed-number problems. The new fold-shut case has tabbed flaps and clearly-marked sections so overlays stay neatly stored, and the convenient size stands on a bookshelf. The 39 total pieces represent halves through sixteenths.
ALGEBRA DECIMAL INSERTS (2-day workshop only)
The Algebra Decimal Inserts are used in our training to represent decimals & polynomials, illustrate X, -X, X² and to represent units, .1s (1/10s) and .01s (1/100s). Using these manipulatives enable students to understand these complex maths concepts in a hands-on way before progressing to abstract application and use. After the training you will also be able to use these to teach all Algebra concepts to an Algebra 1 Level.
There are no prerequisite requirements for this training.
