Maths For Everyone: An Exploration of The Ease and Effectiveness of Teaching Maths using a CRA Approach

The acquisition of maths understanding and application appears as something of a mystery in the education world. A simple survey of school-aged children shows that maths as a subject invokes much anxiety. The mere mention of ‘place value’, ‘fractions’ or ‘algebra’ builds stress and has students disengage and feel ‘stupid’. Understandably, so many avoid any course of mathematics study that requires anything beyond the basics.

Ranking 29th out of 72 (according to PISA 2019 results), it is clear that Australia’s current methodologies and practice do not align with effective pedagogy when it comes to the implementation of mathematics instruction. Basically, we are failing in our aim to equip our students with confidence in everyday life application, and in the skillset necessary for study and meaningful contribution post-schooling.

When approaching students with learning differences, the story is the same - only exponentially magnified. In a subject that can - and should - be simple to teach and to learn, students with different learning needs are often left behind, or expected to be able to learn maths abstractly, even when it is clear they are not grasping the concepts.

Understanding this reality presents us with a wonderful opportunity to re-consider our response to intervention for every student, and to review which components are necessary to teach in the way that THEY learn.

In Esther White's presentation, we will review the ‘CRA’ approach to teaching maths mastery. The Concrete - Representational - Abstract approach also meets essential research-based recommendations including:

  • The use of hands-on manipulatives
  • Explicit instruction
  • Early focus on whole numbers
  • Systematic progress
  • Early focus on whole numbers
  • Cumulative review
  • Assessment & more

In this 100 minute interactive workshop, participants will come to see how they can apply their understanding of effective literacy instruction in teaching maths as one teaches any language.

Teachers and parent alike will be given the opportunity to use the integer blocks, gaining the confidence and understanding to be able to transition their own students from finger counting to recognition of coloured integers that represent numerals, and further to mastery of addition.

Why is this conference for you?

The Language, Literacy and Learning Virtual Conference will provide valuable information, current research evidence and effective strategies to teachers, practitioners and individuals concerned with the provision of high quality instruction to all students.

This event is particularly relevant for:

  • Primary school teachers keen to improve literacy and numeracy outcomes in their classrooms;
  • Principals looking to improve whole-school literacy and numeracy outcomes;
  • School Psychologists keen to better support the schools they work with – particularly in the areas of first-wave high-quality literacy and numeracy instruction, individual assessment, and with second and third wave intervention and accommodation;
  • Speech Pathologists and Occupational Therapists working with students with literacy difficulties keen to improve the assessment they conduct, the therapy they provide and the recommendations they make to schools in relation to literacy difficulties;
  • Learning support teachers keen to assist with the improvement of both initial literacy and numeracy instruction and intervention strategies delivered in the classes they support;
  • All practitioners and parents keen to learn more about the development of language, literacy and learning from an evidence-informed perspective.
