DSF Language, Literacy and Learning Conference

Four days, eight inspirational keynote speakers, more than 50 informative sessions - plus an additional three weeks of on-demand playback access! The 2022 DSF Language, Literacy and Learning Virtual Conference is an unmissable event for anyone with an interest in improving literacy and numeracy outcomes for students.
This year, the DSF Language, Literacy and Learning Conference will be held as a virtual conference over four days between Tuesday 19 April - Friday 22 April 2022.
On each of the four days, two keynote presentations and a number of concurrent sessions will be released at pre-scheduled times throughout the day. Session times will be shared in the conference program which will be available soon. Once released, attendees are free to watch as many of the sessions as they like during the conference and the subsequent 21 days.
Access to these recordings will automatically close at 6:00pm on Friday 13 May 2022. Sessions will vary in duration and will include keynote presentations, workshops and presentations. Resources will be shared and attendees will have access to special discounts and products via our sponsors and exhibitors.

Maths For Everyone: An Exploration of The Ease and Effectiveness of Teaching Maths using a CRA Approach
The acquisition of maths understanding and application appears as something of a mystery in the education world. A simple survey of school-aged children shows that maths as a subject invokes much anxiety. The mere mention of ‘place value’, ‘fractions’ or ‘algebra’ builds stress and has students disengage and feel ‘stupid’. Understandably, so many avoid any course of mathematics study that requires anything beyond the basics.
Ranking 29th out of 72 (according to PISA 2019 results), it is clear that Australia’s current methodologies and practice do not align with effective pedagogy when it comes to the implementation of mathematics instruction. Basically, we are failing in our aim to equip our students with confidence in everyday life application, and in the skillset necessary for study and meaningful contribution post-schooling.
When approaching students with learning differences, the story is the same - only exponentially magnified. In a subject that can - and should - be simple to teach and to learn, students with different learning needs are often left behind, or expected to be able to learn maths abstractly, even when it is clear they are not grasping the concepts.
Understanding this reality presents us with a wonderful opportunity to re-consider our response to intervention for every student, and to review which components are necessary to teach in the way that THEY learn.

In this 100 minute interactive workshop, participants will come to see how they can apply their understanding of effective literacy instruction in teaching maths as one teaches any language.
Teachers and parent alike will be given the opportunity to use the integer blocks, gaining the confidence and understanding to be able to transition their own students from finger counting to recognition of coloured integers that represent numerals, and further to mastery of addition.
