Teach maths intervention effectively

Give your students a deeper understanding and greater confidence of mathematical concepts with evidence based pedagogy, elegant manipulatives and our ICRAVE* Methodology.

Multi-sensory maths supports your tutoring

Designed to be hands on

Our programs are multi-sensory, meaning your students will learn maths using real objects, rather than just learning from a book and trying to conceptualise*. The manipulatives (hands-on tools) are adaptable to suit all ages, grade levels and learning styles, and have been proven by thousands of Australian schools, tutors and home educators to be incredibly transformational.

Cumulative reviews built-in

Whether your students are struggling to keep up, or zooming ahead in maths, this program is the perfect option for you as a tutor. You know the importance of sequential learning, establishing foundations, and continuous review.  Each level of instruction integrates this methodology as you establish a growth mindset through effective teaching practice.

Based on ability level, not grade

Our free online placement tests allow you to fully understand which level is appropriate for your student regardless of their expected school grade. By teaching based on what they do and do not know, you can instead fill the gaps or accelerate them at the appropriate pace to achieve the best results.

Based on mastery, not speed

Our approach has built-in mechanisms to ensure that you know (and your student knows) where they're up to at any point. Each concept builds on each other (you can't learn multiplication if you don't know addition and subtraction first), and progress happens only once mastery is measured.

Professional Development Multi-sensory maths training workshops

Book in for multisensory maths training with Maths Australia CEO, Esther White to learn the full pedagogical approach and develop self confidence in teaching maths effectively. Many of our teachers and tutors express how much this completely changes the way they operate their tutoring practice. After succesfully training with us, we invite you to be listed on our tutor directory as a recommended tutor.

Sequential Instruction

Learning occurs, according to research and evidence-based methodology, with students mastering each concept before moving on to the next, sequentially. Our approach can be applied to teaching in any order, but we recommend a program that follows these sequential research recommendations and only aligns to ACARA guidelines in a modified sequence based on mastery of each maths topic (rather than on a grade level basis).

Great for 1-on-1 and group lessons

Our approach works easily for 1-on-1 or with group lessons so you can tailor your tutoring to suit each students' varying needs.
Our recommended program includes video lessons, student, teacher workbooks and solutions for every level, so you can confidently teach maths mastery. Group training is also available to ensure best results.

Foundational through to University level

Whether you're tutoring younger children, or advanced-level maths students preparing for major exams, we've got you covered. The program levels start with Primer (a fun introduction to maths for the little ones) and progress all the way through to an advanced Calculus material, with each level sequentially building on the previous topics.

How our teaching methodology works in practice

STEP 1

Prepare to teach

After identifying your students current level of math mastery (using our free online placement tests), you'll read the relevant instruction manual, watch the lesson-by-lesson video and use our one set of manipulatives to teach in an engaging, multi-sensory way.

See level descriptions and sample lessons here

STEP 2

Present your lesson

Being fully equipped with a deep understanding of what and how  to teach each lesson , you'll know exactly where to start to progress your student confidently with maths.

You'll present the topic, teach explicitly and ensure mastery of concrete, representational and abstract forms of our maths language and application for everyday life.

STEP 3

Build strong foundations

Practice each concept with your student using specific tools to build strong foundations that are based on understanding.

'Build-draw-write-say’ establishes a systematic, hands-on approach to effective learning. Using a simple  "I do - we do - you do" approach, we build each problem with the manipulatives, draw a representation that is accurate and to scale, write it down step-by-step, then clearly say how the solution works. Learning is reinforced as the student explains the concept back to you. Regular use of the one consistent manipulative reduces cognitive load, enhances explicit instruction and ensures understanding of each topic.

STEP 4

Progress with confidence

Your students will develop mastery and, as a result, grow in confidence as you teach them the way they learn.

Maths Australia only recommends programs designed to support individual learning at each student's own pace.

Better results for the student means a better and more satisfying result for you.

What other teachers and tutors say...

Math-U- See is a brilliant program. It encourages the student to use all of their senses, providing the opportunity to link information through hands-on manipulatives to what is already known and understood - and to be able to use it in everyday life!

Narelle Hose ... Specialist Tutor

As a former High School Mathematics teacher and longtime maths tutor, I could see straight away the benefits of the Math-U-See method. A true benefit is 'seeing' the maths in action with the blocks - really helps students understand the concepts. Teaching students the basics really sets them up to understand mathematics and it builds their understanding and confidence as they move through each level. Math-U-See teaches the why before the how - I even find myself blown away sometimes when I see something that I never knew the why of what we did, I just knew how to do it (I learnt a formula). Forever grateful.

Kim Hol ... Tutor - ex High School Teacher

I have found that using “maths mastery” as an approach, my daughter understands and retains information much better. She has auditory processing disorder and easily gets distracted or doesn’t comprehend – but the Math-U-See videos are simple to understand and because she is a tactile and visual learner, the manipulatives are perfect! I make sure she has time to process what she’s been taught, comprehend and get it right. Using Math-U-See’s techniques of teaching mastery, I’ve used the same teaching method through her other subjects and it works quite well!

How does a mastery-based approach align with the Australian Curriculum?

Math-U-See uses a mastery based teaching approach vs the Australian Curriculum "spiral approach".  We have full documentation on fulfilling the Australian Curriculum requirements using this program:

THE FOUNDATIONAL LEVELS

( Pre-school to Grade 8 and Intervention )

Primer

A Fun Introduction to Maths

Alpha

Mastering Single Digit Addition and Subtraction

Beta

Addition and Subtraction for Multi-Digit Numbers

Gamma

Multiplication for Single and Multi-Digit Numbers

Delta

Short & long Division, Solving problems with all 4 operations

Epsilon

Fractions, Factors, Mixed Numbers and more

Zeta

Decimals, Percents and Conversions

Our 7 foundational levels focus around multi-sensory maths using manipulatives (hands-on tools) and our 4-step methodology:

SEE IT

FEEL IT

WRITE IT

SAY IT

Students progress through each level sequentially (left to right above) to build on the foundational principles learnt in the previous levels. For some students, a particular level will be easy and they'll breeze through. For other students, that same level may take a little longer. That's why we advocate for the Math-U-See program to support the Maths Australia teaching approach. The layout of the program caters to any student's learning speed.

Simply take your time on the levels you're struggling with, and breeze on through if you're mastering it quickly. Each level comes with lessons and materials to make sure 'mastery' of that level has been achieved before you move on to the next.

Algebra 2

Factoring Polynomials, Quadratic Formula and more

Pre-Calculus

Calculus

Derivatives, Integrals, Calculus Applications, Differential Equations, & more

As students progress into more advanced maths concepts, the understanding developed in mastering the foundational concepts form the backbone of knowledge. With an underpinning of concrete maths understanding, the advanced (mostly abstract) ideas are rooted in a rich depth of understanding... No more just remembering formulas!

Each level continues to sequentially build on previous mastery, all the way through to our final university-grade Calculus level.

Because our manipulatives can be used for multiple levels, you do NOT need to purchase them every year.
