LESSON 23: Addition Of Tens - Teacher Instruction + Demonstration

This and the following lesson 'Addition Of Hundreds' shows one that, with an understanding of single digit addition and of place value, a student can now add any number, despite it's size, as long as the unit of measure (the 'kind') is the same.

In other words, three plus three is always going to equal six, as long as I have the same unit of measure. This unit may be litres, dogs, fifths, bananas, metres, square kilometres, , tens, hundreds, or any other kind.

So it goes without saying that you must ensure the student has understood these two components to be able to progress in these lessons with ease.

As always, before progressing to the Student Workbook, follow these steps:

1. Build - use the blocks as you tell life stories that are relevant to the student, and have the student make up their own life stories as they build with the blocks. Identify the unit of measure so that a ten block can represent ten of this same unit.

2. Draw - only once they are proficient with building and applying in their everyday life, then progress to this drawing stage. Remember that the drawing must be, as much as is possible, the student's drawing of what they have built. This supports them to make the transition from the concrete three dimensional to the abstract one dimensional symbols on the piece of paper to which you are progressing. The drawing must be proportionately accurate, otherwise it undermines the accuracy of our base ten decimal system.

3. Write - once the student is proficient with the building and drawing stages. This symbolic stage needs only to be approached once we have understanding. In this case, it is the simplest piece and simply reflects what has been done with the building and drawing stages. Maths is a language; a communication tool, and so we need to choose the correct symbols to communicate the question being addresses.

4. Say - ensure there is understanding through having the student teach the lesson back to you. This enables you to assess the efficacy of your teaching, and to then adjust it accordingly so the student can gain understanding. Ensure your explanations are accurate, and be prepared and willing to become the student and let the blocks teach you, because 'the blocks never lie'.

Before you progress from addition of tens, ensure fluency between each component listed above. This will build student confidence and ensure you have a foundation to build upon to addition of hundreds and beyond.
